You have a blog with lots of followers and a vibrant email list that loves your content, yet when you try and do a nicely targeted affiliate promotion you fail to sell a thing. Sound familiar? Read on to find out why..
As consumers we’re actually pretty complex creatures. Contrary to the idea that we’re all addicted to buying anything and everything the choice available is so overwhelming that getting someone to choose your product, or the product your promoting is actually really difficult and is a fine art.
This ‘fine art’ comes in the form on the marketing acronym AIDA which stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and Action.
Rather than thinking of your affilate promotion as one blog post or a last minute email blast, start thinking of it in terms of a four part process. Yes it takes a bit more work but your bank balance will thank you for it.
Let’s start with stage one of the process;
Attention
Your first job is to get the attention of your readers and make them aware of the product. Note that there should be no real selling taking place here, of course embed the links but this blog post and email should merely be about letting you readers know that something is coming and that you’ll provide more details soon.
Interest
Your next job is to create interest for the product. In a seperate post or email let your readers know about what is unique and interesting about this product ie. why is it different? You will also want to highlight the products strongest features. Use plenty of your own experience and thoughts on this, it’s you they trust and will ultimately buy from.
Desire
The third stage is creating desire for the product. This could be selling the benefits of the product to your reader or letting them know it’s about to launch. It’s often said that consumers don’t buy products they buy benefits or desired results. Let your audience know exactly what these are, if you’ve used the product yourself (which I recommend) then you can give your reader your unique insights into this.
Action
The fourth and final action is to encourage your reader to take action, in this case make a purchase. This can done through a direct call to action ‘buy X now’ and also highlighting any time limits or scarcity, for example if there are only X amount of products available.
Follow this four step strategy for affiliate promotions and see your success rate soar!
