What is customer satisfaction?

February 15, 2012 in About ACEInspire, Featured, Headline

aceinspire co ownerAre people who buy from you ‘satisfied customers?’ In marketing speak, customer satisfaction occurs when the perceived value of a product is realised when the consumer purchases the product. Here’s an example to make this clearer:

I go out for a meal. My expected benefits may include;

• a tasty meal,
• clean surroundings,
• good table service,
• friendly waiting staff,
• a place to hang my coat,
• a choice of meals for various dietary requirements etc.

Customer satisfaction is achieved when all or the vast majority of the above are fulfilled. So far, so good, but did you know your business could be achieving much more? Customer delight occurs when all the above are fulfilled to an extremely high standard or there are unexpected benefits. In our restaurant example, this could be an amuse bouche, complimentary bread or an exceptionally helpful waitress. And the opposite, customer dissatisfaction, occurs when very few of the expected benefits are realised or when sacrifices are more severe than expected. This could mean that the meal is cold when it arrives, or the waiter is rude, or the bill is much higher than expected.

Think for a moment about your own business. Are you exceeding your customer’s expected benefits?

As marketers and business women we must constantly ensure that we’re meeting or exceeding our customer’s expectations. Why? Because a delighted customer is one that will recommend you, and word of mouth or social media recommendations are valuable. Be warned, though. Consumers may become accustomed to being ‘delighted’ more often than not which makes the job of exceeding their expectations harder. Be innovative. Pay attention to the customers needs and keep listening to feedback and encouraging people to share their views. This will help you to continually create customer delight.

Remember happy customers are returning customers, so for those willing to put in the effort there is just reward.

What is customer value?

February 10, 2012 in ACE Online Business, Featured, Headline

aceinspire co ownerWhat decisions do your customers make then they buy your product? Read this article about customer value and you’ll understand more about how to boost the value someone gets from your products and increase sales
What is Customer Value?

Customer value is the perceived range of benefits a consumer gains from purchasing a product or service minus the perceived sacrifices.

For example;

Let’s consider an eCourse. The benefits are;

* Gaining knowledge
* Improving your marketing skills
* Gaining more customers as a result of being better at marketing
* Being able to learn flexibly
* Having a support network when you hit a sticking point

The sacrifices are;

* The monetary exchange
* The time spent consuming the content

Think for a moment about your own products and services. Think about the benefits under the following headings;

* Product benefits
* Service benefits
* Relationship benefits
* Image benefits

Now consider the sacrifices;

* Money
* Time
* Energy
* Physchological

To raise customer value you must raise the perceived benefits whilst minimising the perceived sacrifices. What action can you take in your own business to achieve this today?

Pinterest – business as well as pleasure

February 8, 2012 in Featured, Headline, Social Media

Pinterest is a great new site, an interactive pin board where you can pin all the images you love from the Internet and keep them for future reference as well as sharing with followers.  This site is great for crafter, brides and graphic designers and is also a great addition to your social media promotion.

Why can Pinterest be beneficial for Business?

  • Engaged users. It is not like other social media where you  attract followers, the users on this site tend to be happy to find items and share them in their small groups. They are interested in what is on trend now and this creates real-time trending, which is great for companies looking to see what is about to become the next must have item.
  • Visual link building. When someone clicks on the image on your pin board, this automatically links back to the site it is from, therefore these visual links are great for actual engagement.
  • Show off your brand. The boards are a great way to show how stylish, hip or classy your brand is to potential customers. Having one of your products pinned and raved about will say a lot about your brand.
  • Local SEO. Local links are pure gold for small local businesses and these are being embedded in descriptions and comments!

How to Use Pinterest for Business

  • Creating your Boards. Be creative, do not just simply pin your own products, as with any other social media site, continual self promotion will turn people off your brand. A great idea if you are a local business is to create a local board, ie, things I love about _________!
  • Search. Use the search facility to find out who else is using the site. It is still early days for this site but once you start looking around you will find people you want to interact with you and you can help by promoting their businesses too.
  • Pin. To maximise the effectiveness of Pinterest you need invest some time in you’re pinning. A great idea is to add the Pinterest bookmarklet so as when you see pictures of interest to you, you simply click on this little logo on your dashboard and then you can pin it to your boards. To build followers a great idea is to add a pin this button to your items, like the Facebook Like button.
  • Invite. Once you are a member and have built up your boards, don’t forget to invite others to the site. Be strategic about this, invite others you’d like to help as well as people who will help promote your business and products too!
  • Engage. Search the site to find other products and users you like and start pinning their items on your board along with making comments. If you find something and it has been taken from review on a blog, in your comment you could add a link to the original site, this will help build you reputation on the site. Alternatively you can add links to your products in the comment box so long as it is relevant and not just blatant self promotion.

Marketing: What Does it Mean?

February 6, 2012 in email marketing, Featured, Headline, Online Marketing

aceinspire co ownerMarketing should play a central role in your business and should penetrate and effect business decisions in all areas from product design to how it’s delivered, but if you own a microbusiness it can be hard to see what marketing ideas will work well for you. In this article Erica Douglas explains how solopreneurs and one-woman businesses can really make their business stand out.

“The basic function of marketing is to attract and retain customers at a profit”

Peter Drucker

Consider for a moment a market with ten stalls selling handmade soap. Making and selling soap is an easy business to set up so there’s lots of people who want to do it. The ONLY difference between the stalls is their marketing unless they decide to compete on price and we all know that, as a sole trader, competing on price is one of the quickest ways to go out of business. The market stall that succeeds is the one that provides the customer with the most satisfaction, sometimes called ‘added value’. Let’s imagine the buying experience at two of the stalls.

Stall A

I walk up to the stall. I look at the soap. I decide on a lavender scented bar. I pay the stall holder. I leave.

Stall B

I walk up to the stall and I am greeted by the stall holder. The stall holder asks me what purpose I’m purchasing for and we get into a conversation about the soap being for my mother in law’s birthday. The stall holder tells me how she produces the various soaps and make some recommendations. I feel I have built up a rapport with the stall holder and am keen to support her business. I’ve also learned that some of the soaps are very unique and I’ve thought of a few more upcoming birthdays that the soaps would make an ideal gift for. I purchase five bars in total, three from a premium organic range. The stall holder wraps the soaps and puts them in a gift bag. Inside the gift bag she tucks a pretty business card.

A month later I find out that the recipients of the soaps loved them and asked where I got them from. I start telling them all about the independent seller and I’m proud to relay the uniqueness of the product and how I’d chosen the gift carefully with them in mind. I remember the pretty business card and pull it out. The stall holder also sells via the online marketplace Etsy and soon three of the five recipients are buying soaps for themselves and their friends and family.

In the first example the seller thought it was enough to just be there with a stall stocked with soap for sale. In the second the seller realised that the success of her business relied upon going the extra mile and understanding that the value exchange taking place could be so much more than just the money and the soap. The second seller understood that as a consumer I can buy soap anywhere.

One of these businesses will succeed and prosper, because whilst many people can make and sell soap not everyone understands that it’s not just about the core product (the soap). In fact the soap is only a small part of the value exchange.

Think for a moment about your own product or service. Are you offering ‘added value’? Are you standing out from the crowd?
