Are eBooks a consolation prize for people who aren’t good enough to get a book deal?

January 6, 2012 in eBook, Featured, Headline

Knowledge to Profit How to Create and Sell eBooksSo, are you a writer looking for a book deal? Have you written proposals, approached agents, contacted publishers to no avail? Are you reading this article reluctantly wondering if an eBook is the last chance saloon for you to see your words in print? If so, listen up. I’m going to tell you why the modern author needs to look at eBooks and self publishing as a viable alternative to the traditional book deal, and why eBooks can lead to more sales and profits.

First, let’s look at why would-be authors might aspire to a publishing contract. It might be for the advance.  If you have watched with envy authors who are reported to have advances of £80,000 or more, remember that the press is likely to only report huge advances for people who are well known already. As a first time author, your advance might be a few hundred or thousand pounds: definitely not enough to live on while you write your book. And, your advance is just that: payment in advance of royalties. The publisher estimates anticipated book sales: the bigger the advance the more your book needs to sell before you see another penny. The Authors Licensing & Collecting Society surveyed 25,000 authors in 2005 and the media author’s ‘wage’ was found to be less than a quarter of the typical wage of a UK employee. The ‘average’ authors wage is around £16,000, but this is skewed by the top 10% of authors who earn more than 50% of the income, leaving the median or typical wage as just £4000! There are no current stats on the income authors receive from online publishing, but there is a very interesting case study here, from one author who hopes his books that he has released through a publisher go out of print as he can see how he can make more money from releasing his own eBooks.

So, if authors tend not to be in it for the money, what about the kudos that comes with having a book in print? I know from personal experience the excitement at holding your book, at seeing it in a bookshop. I won’t deny it is a buzz, but it is a transitory buzz. If you feel that eBooks might be a bigger earner for you than print books, there are still many ways to get hold of print copies of your work. You could consider setting up a contract with Lightning Source, one of the UK’s biggest digital printers, or going via a self publishing company like Lulu.com, or, if you know that your clients will want your print books in significant numbers and, like me, are clear how you can sell books at workshops or events you might even invest in a large print run. Some self published authors use a combination of routes: registering with a printers like Antony Rowe that offer print on demand books that you can sell via Amazon and distribution to bookstores via Gardner’s distribution house. When you look at the data, you’ll see that eBook sales, and sales of eBook readers are increasing exponentially.  Only this month the editor of the Independent admitted that in 25 years time we may no longer have print newspapers: could print books become the province of antique collectors and OAPs while anyone under 60 reads electronically?

Electronic publishing has transformed the landscape for any would-be author. If you have a passion to see your work read, don’t let the search for a book deal delay you anymore. Start looking into self publishing and eBooks. Build your own profile through social media and find people who love to read your kind of writing just as much as you love to write it. EBooks can be produced much more rapidly than print books, you can cover hot topics before a traditional printer has sent out a contract, let alone warmed up the presses. Use the internet to make real relationships with your readers and sell books directly: you’ll wonder why you ever wanted a book deal.

EBooks: how to choose a killer topic

October 26, 2011 in About ACEInspire, eBook, Featured, Headline

What is the biggest problem most people experience when planning to write an
eBook? It isn’t wrangling with the technical logistics of getting your eBook
up online: there are plenty of step by step guides to help with that. No,
the most common problem for potential eBook authors is how to get the right
words on the right topic on the page in the first place. Read on for author
Antonia Chitty’s tips on turning your ideas and expertise in a book that
will sell.

Writing an eBook can seem impossibly difficult if you are more used to
making business decisions, but approach writing your book like you work on
your business and you’ll find it is easier than you think. Here are my five
steps to help you ensure that your eBook is packed with great content that
hits the spot for your clients, solves their problems and will sell.

1. Pick your problem.
When planning your eBook, if you want it to sell, don’t just rely on your
own intuition as to what subjects to cover. Instead, note down all the
questions your clients ask you, then go out and do even more research,
asking people what they need to know in your area of expertise. The clearer
you are that there is a need for yr eBook the more likely it is to sell. The
more focused your eBook is on clients real life questions, the more sales
you will make.

2. Focus your content.
Once you have a clear idea of the questions that your clients are asking,
make a list. Note down which questions come up most often, and whether any
cover similar issues. Group your questions to address in your eBook, then
pick just one group of questions to answer. Don’t attempt to cover
everything you know in your first eBook. Your clients won’t thank you for
it: people are looking for clear focussed solutions to specific problems,
not lengthy books where it is hard to find the information that they need.
What’s more, if you are writing your eBook as a business venture, you’ll
find it much more profitable to create a series of affordable short guides
that you can issue every few months and keep people coming back for more,
than trying to sell one ‘great work’ for the rest of your career.

3. Where’s the pain?
Before you start writing, I want you to look at those groups of questions
again. Alongside considering which questions come up more frequently, you
also need to think about how pressing each set of problems is for your
potential readers. Pick problems with a low level of pain, and you won’t
make many sales. Select issues that are causing real and significant pain
for people and you are much more likely to sel your eBook in big numbers.
Consider what people really need in life: happiness and health. Will your
eBook help them become happier or healthier? Will it help them make more
money, which is a goal in itself but also gives people the freedom they want
to achieve their goals. Can you show someone the shortcuts to create more
time to do the things they love? Consider the problems and pain people are
facing, consider the big benefits your eBook can bring, and pick your topic
accordingly.

4. Check your niche.
We’re nearly there now! If you have followed the steps in this article you
should be much closer to finding the perfect topic for your eBook, one that
will make really good sales when you launch, and go on selling! But, before
you put pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, do one further check. You
wouldn’t launch a business if there was an identical enterprise already set
up next door, would you? So, take a couple of hours to look for other books,
eBooks and training materials on the same topic as you are considering.
Look at the strengths and weaknesses of potential competitors and test your
eBook ideas against them. How can you make your book more relevant to
readers, more attractive, and more marketable? At this stage if you find
that there is a killer eBook out there already, buy it, learn from it, and
go back to the beginning of the process. You’ll be armed with more knowledge
of both your topic and what the market wants. If you can’t find anything
that competes with your eBook idea, you are ready to go on to the final
step.

5. Create your plan.
This step is one that will make it so much easier for you to write your
book. Take the questions you want to address, and break them down into
different areas that you can write on. Then break each topic down into sub
topics. Keep on doing this until you have a list of all the possible ideas
that you could address. You might want to do this like a mind map or spider
chart. Why does this make it so much easier to write your book? Once you
have broken your bok down into sections and subsections, you will only need
to write a few hundred words on each part. You can build up your eBook
section by section. You can write for half an hour or an hour each day,
addressing one section at a time, but with a clear overall vision and
direction. You will also be able to work out just how long it will take you
to create your eBook. You might need to write 25 short sections of a few
hundred words, writing one section every working day, and know that you’ll
have the first draft of your book in 5 weeks.

I hope that this has made it much easier for you to find the perfect topic
for your first eBook, and take the first steps to writing it.

Why Write an eBook?

October 7, 2011 in ACE Online Business, eBook, Featured, Headline

When you meet someone who has written a book, or see someone’s status update linking to their book launch party, do you think, ‘”Wow”? Writing a book is a big status raiser: once you have a book published, you have real AUTHORity.

So, what’s AUTHORity, and how do you get it? Coach Allison Marlowe explains, “Author status gets you closer to the top of the Pyramid of Power and Profit.” If you are competing for clients, having a published book can give you the edge. People trust the printed (and eprinted) word. If a publisher trusts you enough to write a book, if you can pull together 25,000 or 50,000 coherent words on a topic, you’re seen as an expert.

Beyond that, an eBook is a great way to reach new audiences. £180million worth of eBooks were sold in the UK last year, and in the US there was a 160% increase on eBook sales in the first half of 2011 compared to the first half of 2010. Mark Coker of Digital publishers Smashwords says, “Some authors choose to give their entire book away for free because it’s more important to them they reach an audience, or they may want to leverage the notoriety from the book to monetize their fame in other ways.”

And it is up to you whether you choose to use your eBook power to build your reputation or build your bank account. Dahlia made over $5000 in eBook sales in July and has funded her move to Hawaii – that’s true testimony to what eBooks can do.

So, are you feeling inspired to write an eBook? Allison Marlow advises, “Look at creating an eBook as your opportunity. If you have something that will resonate with and help other people, you have a duty to create your eBook.”
