How eBooks will make you money

January 31, 2012 in About ACEInspire, eBook, Featured, Headline

If you’re considering joining the From Knowledge to Profit course, but are worried about paying for the course, here are 9 ways to make money from your eBook that have worked for us:

  1. Sell the book direct from your own website.
  2. Add your book to Amazon Kindle. You can’t afford to miss out on the biggest eBook-buying audience.
  3. Add your book to the sites that are already selling millions of eBooks. We share them with you in the course.
  4. Develop consultancy or individual coaching services to solve the same issues you address in your eBook.
  5. Offer group training, workshops or group coaching. With your profile as an author, it’s much easier to sell places at your own events.
  6. aceinspire co ownerContact people who have bought your book direct from your site and offer them other products and services: if they love what you have written they will be keen to buy again.
  7. Create an affiliate scheme so other people can sell your books for you. With an eBook there is no post or packing so you can give them a great incentive AND still make good profits.
  8. Get in touch with conference organisers offering to speak, and include a copy of your book. I’ve made over £1000 by speaking at a single event AND got extra consultancy work afterwards from attendees.
  9. Turn your book into an online course. Some people much prefer eLessons to reading a book, and you can add value with a member site too. If you ask for a small monthly subscription fee for your course you can create a regular stream of income.

Just pick a few of these ideas and you’ll not only make back your course fees, you’ll also have plenty of streams of ongoing income that will allow you to do the work you love AND have time to follow your heart’s interests too.

Join From Knowledge to Profit, and we’ll tell you much more about creating your eBook AND making it a profitable business asset.

Erica on ebooks – join the course

January 30, 2012 in About ACEInspire, eBook, Featured, Headline

aceinspire co ownerThis post is for you if you want to find out how an eBook can make a real difference to your business, because I’m going to tell you how one started my business career.

In 2007, I was a stay at home mum. Due to illness I was keen to find ways to make money from home, so I tried out an eBay business. I spotted an information product about how to make money online, which was all about the value of information and how if you had the right knowledge you could package this and sell it via the internet. This was big news for me and I decided to give it a try.

I set about writing an eBook on pregnancy and the newborn phase. I’d just had my own daughter and felt I had knowledge to share! I included everything I’d learned including; what to pack for hospital, the best place to find maternity clothes, what you did/didn’t need for a newborn. The finished product was just a Word document. I created my own cover and sold my ‘eBook’ via eBay. As the orders came in I would manually email the book to the buyer. I was smart enough to include links to my parenting blog in both the book and the listings so I had the added bonus of driving traffic to my blog. That first eBook didn’t generate a huge amount of money but it taught me a lot about eBooks and the potential they had to become an income for me.

When I look back, there is so much I would do differently, but this little eBook was the start of something much bigger. Since then selling my specialist knowledge has been the crux of my business success.

For two years I focused on my blog before I was ready to launch my next eBook. I’d got much smarter about choosing a niche topic. This time I created on how to start and maintain a successful parenting blog, called ‘The Mum Blogger eBook’. The document was a PDF, it had a professional cover design, there was no competition for the niche and I sold it for a much higher price. I had far more followers I could tell about the book, and it’s been a passive income for me for the past three years. It still sells now in its new form, A Guide to Successful Blogging.

Beyond money my blogging eBook has given me credibility in my niche and demonstrated my expertise. It has been the foundation that has allowed me to go on and create eCourses, speak at events and do consulting. I’ve also just co-authored two further print books which will be published this year, by two different publishing houses.

So, that’s how eBooks were a critical part of my journey to a successful business. eBooks remain a valuable part of our business. They are available all the time and that evens out our cashflow. They are an affordable way to offer help to clients who want to taste our advice for the first time or who are on a limited budget.

If you think that you’d like to make eBooks a valuable part of your business success, join From Knowledge to Profit. You have just two days left to discover just how much this course could help you build your profile and boost your business, just like it did for me.

How becoming an author changed my life, and could transform yours too

January 27, 2012 in About ACEInspire, eBook, Featured, Headline

I’m Antonia Chitty. You might know me from my website Family Friendly Working, my former PR business ACPR, or as part of the ACEInspire team. Or, maybe you know me because you have read one of my books. This is my story, of how I became an author, and how my life has transformed.

Back in 1997, I was walking home from work at RNIB with a friend. We were discussing dreams and ambitions, and I said ‘I’d love to write a book.’ I didn’t think anything more of it at that point. I had nothing to write about, no practical plans to achieve my dream.

Fast forward a few years. In 2005 I’m a PR business owner, mum to one and expecting number two. I do PR for some people, and have written some factsheets to help others who have a tiny budget and need to do their own PR. In the space of a week, two business contacts who have seen the factsheets both say, “You could turn that into a book”. Suddenly, I have something to write about. What’s more, with maternity leave coming up I also have time to write. My first book, A Guide to Promoting Your Business, comes out in spring 2007.

Fast forward again to today. I’ve now written 15 books. Rather than working swapping my time for money, I have merged ACPR into ACEInspire which is run by a great team, giving me far more freedom. The business has grown so we have a stable income I speak at conferences and run training on and offline. Publishers approach ME with book ideas now, and I write those that interest me the most.

I’ve learnt LOADS along the way as I’ve worked with a range of publishers:

  • I’ve self published books, and ALWAYS made a profit.
  • I’ve discovered how to sell books when you have thousands of copies of a self published book sitting in a garage! And I’ve found out how eBooks can take the risk away of investing in printed books.
  • I’ve promoted my own books, and those of other people: I can even tell you how to sell 100 books from an email.
  • I’ve worked through all the hard ways of promoting an eBook, and discovered all the smart ways.
  • I’ve built up a great team who help my books succeed.

If you want to join me and make the most of all my knowledge and experience, join the From Knowledge to Profit course. Not only do you get my help, you also benefit from input from other key members of my ‘book creation’ team including Erica Douglas. On Monday you can find out how an eBook helped Erica say good bye to the job centre and was the start of much bigger things.

What an eBook can do for you and your business

January 26, 2012 in About ACEInspire, eBook, Featured, Headline

Knowledge to Profit How to Create and Sell eBooksYesterday we told you about our new eCourse, From Knowledge to Profit. The course will take a small group through the process of writing, publishing and selling an eBook over the next three months. If you’re thinking that sounds like it might be a lot of hard work, you’re right! So why bother?

We’re bringing you this course because we know from personal experience that becoming an author makes an enormous difference, to both your business and your life. That’s easy to say, so here is a fact:

  • Around 81% of people want to write a book. Of course, most people don’t bother! But if you’re in that 81%, imagine how good it will feel when you have not just written the book, but can actually see it for sale on Amazon? And when you get the first order through your site, and receive your first payment? If you’re in the 81%, joining the From Knowledge to Profit course could help you fulfil a long held dream.

If that sounds a bit airy-fairy for you, if you’re more about successful business than dreams, here’s another fact, a personal one this time:

  • I, Antonia, have personally seen the amount I can charge increase by a factor of 20 since becoming an author.

Now, don’t be misled by that one: we’re comparing when I started in business to 8 years and around 15 books later. But DO get the message that becoming an author transformed my business. I’m going to share more about that transformation tomorrow. And here’s one final fact:

  • The average annual income for an author is £4,000. Now, if you’re saying ‘hold on a minute, I thought you said all that hard work was going to be worth it!’ read on. Our business turns over more than twice that every month with a profit margin of around 65-70%!

This course is about working hard to write your book … but we’ll also teach you how to work SMART and really reap the financial rewards.

So, whether you want to fulfil a lifelong dream to write a book or you want to see your business profits soar, check out the From Knowledge to Profit course. Yes, it will be hard work, but you’ll be in good company and have lots of expert help and support. We’ll show you the fastest path to eBook success!

Are eBooks a consolation prize for people who aren’t good enough to get a book deal?

January 6, 2012 in eBook, Featured, Headline

Knowledge to Profit How to Create and Sell eBooksSo, are you a writer looking for a book deal? Have you written proposals, approached agents, contacted publishers to no avail? Are you reading this article reluctantly wondering if an eBook is the last chance saloon for you to see your words in print? If so, listen up. I’m going to tell you why the modern author needs to look at eBooks and self publishing as a viable alternative to the traditional book deal, and why eBooks can lead to more sales and profits.

First, let’s look at why would-be authors might aspire to a publishing contract. It might be for the advance.  If you have watched with envy authors who are reported to have advances of £80,000 or more, remember that the press is likely to only report huge advances for people who are well known already. As a first time author, your advance might be a few hundred or thousand pounds: definitely not enough to live on while you write your book. And, your advance is just that: payment in advance of royalties. The publisher estimates anticipated book sales: the bigger the advance the more your book needs to sell before you see another penny. The Authors Licensing & Collecting Society surveyed 25,000 authors in 2005 and the media author’s ‘wage’ was found to be less than a quarter of the typical wage of a UK employee. The ‘average’ authors wage is around £16,000, but this is skewed by the top 10% of authors who earn more than 50% of the income, leaving the median or typical wage as just £4000! There are no current stats on the income authors receive from online publishing, but there is a very interesting case study here, from one author who hopes his books that he has released through a publisher go out of print as he can see how he can make more money from releasing his own eBooks.

So, if authors tend not to be in it for the money, what about the kudos that comes with having a book in print? I know from personal experience the excitement at holding your book, at seeing it in a bookshop. I won’t deny it is a buzz, but it is a transitory buzz. If you feel that eBooks might be a bigger earner for you than print books, there are still many ways to get hold of print copies of your work. You could consider setting up a contract with Lightning Source, one of the UK’s biggest digital printers, or going via a self publishing company like Lulu.com, or, if you know that your clients will want your print books in significant numbers and, like me, are clear how you can sell books at workshops or events you might even invest in a large print run. Some self published authors use a combination of routes: registering with a printers like Antony Rowe that offer print on demand books that you can sell via Amazon and distribution to bookstores via Gardner’s distribution house. When you look at the data, you’ll see that eBook sales, and sales of eBook readers are increasing exponentially.  Only this month the editor of the Independent admitted that in 25 years time we may no longer have print newspapers: could print books become the province of antique collectors and OAPs while anyone under 60 reads electronically?

Electronic publishing has transformed the landscape for any would-be author. If you have a passion to see your work read, don’t let the search for a book deal delay you anymore. Start looking into self publishing and eBooks. Build your own profile through social media and find people who love to read your kind of writing just as much as you love to write it. EBooks can be produced much more rapidly than print books, you can cover hot topics before a traditional printer has sent out a contract, let alone warmed up the presses. Use the internet to make real relationships with your readers and sell books directly: you’ll wonder why you ever wanted a book deal.

EBooks: how to choose a killer topic

October 26, 2011 in About ACEInspire, eBook, Featured, Headline

What is the biggest problem most people experience when planning to write an
eBook? It isn’t wrangling with the technical logistics of getting your eBook
up online: there are plenty of step by step guides to help with that. No,
the most common problem for potential eBook authors is how to get the right
words on the right topic on the page in the first place. Read on for author
Antonia Chitty’s tips on turning your ideas and expertise in a book that
will sell.

Writing an eBook can seem impossibly difficult if you are more used to
making business decisions, but approach writing your book like you work on
your business and you’ll find it is easier than you think. Here are my five
steps to help you ensure that your eBook is packed with great content that
hits the spot for your clients, solves their problems and will sell.

1. Pick your problem.
When planning your eBook, if you want it to sell, don’t just rely on your
own intuition as to what subjects to cover. Instead, note down all the
questions your clients ask you, then go out and do even more research,
asking people what they need to know in your area of expertise. The clearer
you are that there is a need for yr eBook the more likely it is to sell. The
more focused your eBook is on clients real life questions, the more sales
you will make.

2. Focus your content.
Once you have a clear idea of the questions that your clients are asking,
make a list. Note down which questions come up most often, and whether any
cover similar issues. Group your questions to address in your eBook, then
pick just one group of questions to answer. Don’t attempt to cover
everything you know in your first eBook. Your clients won’t thank you for
it: people are looking for clear focussed solutions to specific problems,
not lengthy books where it is hard to find the information that they need.
What’s more, if you are writing your eBook as a business venture, you’ll
find it much more profitable to create a series of affordable short guides
that you can issue every few months and keep people coming back for more,
than trying to sell one ‘great work’ for the rest of your career.

3. Where’s the pain?
Before you start writing, I want you to look at those groups of questions
again. Alongside considering which questions come up more frequently, you
also need to think about how pressing each set of problems is for your
potential readers. Pick problems with a low level of pain, and you won’t
make many sales. Select issues that are causing real and significant pain
for people and you are much more likely to sel your eBook in big numbers.
Consider what people really need in life: happiness and health. Will your
eBook help them become happier or healthier? Will it help them make more
money, which is a goal in itself but also gives people the freedom they want
to achieve their goals. Can you show someone the shortcuts to create more
time to do the things they love? Consider the problems and pain people are
facing, consider the big benefits your eBook can bring, and pick your topic
accordingly.

4. Check your niche.
We’re nearly there now! If you have followed the steps in this article you
should be much closer to finding the perfect topic for your eBook, one that
will make really good sales when you launch, and go on selling! But, before
you put pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, do one further check. You
wouldn’t launch a business if there was an identical enterprise already set
up next door, would you? So, take a couple of hours to look for other books,
eBooks and training materials on the same topic as you are considering.
Look at the strengths and weaknesses of potential competitors and test your
eBook ideas against them. How can you make your book more relevant to
readers, more attractive, and more marketable? At this stage if you find
that there is a killer eBook out there already, buy it, learn from it, and
go back to the beginning of the process. You’ll be armed with more knowledge
of both your topic and what the market wants. If you can’t find anything
that competes with your eBook idea, you are ready to go on to the final
step.

5. Create your plan.
This step is one that will make it so much easier for you to write your
book. Take the questions you want to address, and break them down into
different areas that you can write on. Then break each topic down into sub
topics. Keep on doing this until you have a list of all the possible ideas
that you could address. You might want to do this like a mind map or spider
chart. Why does this make it so much easier to write your book? Once you
have broken your bok down into sections and subsections, you will only need
to write a few hundred words on each part. You can build up your eBook
section by section. You can write for half an hour or an hour each day,
addressing one section at a time, but with a clear overall vision and
direction. You will also be able to work out just how long it will take you
to create your eBook. You might need to write 25 short sections of a few
hundred words, writing one section every working day, and know that you’ll
have the first draft of your book in 5 weeks.

I hope that this has made it much easier for you to find the perfect topic
for your first eBook, and take the first steps to writing it.
