What is customer value?

What is Customer Value?

Customer value is the perceived range of benefits a consumer gains from purchasing a product or service minus the perceived sacrifices.

For example;

Let’s consider an eCourse. The benefits are;

* Gaining knowledge
* Improving your marketing skills
* Gaining more customers as a result of being better at marketing
* Being able to learn flexibly
* Having a support network when you hit a sticking point

The sacrifices are;

* The monetary exchange
* The time spent consuming the content

Think for a moment about your own products and services. Think about the benefits under the following headings;

* Product benefits
* Service benefits
* Relationship benefits
* Image benefits

Now consider the sacrifices;

* Money
* Time
* Energy
* Physchological

To raise customer value you must raise the perceived benefits whilst minimising the perceived sacrifices. What action can you take in your own business to achieve this today?

What’s Stopping You?

It is easy to allow obstacles to stop us from making the progress we need to succeed.  You can be daunted when you feel that you don’t know how to deal with a problem.

“A problem is the gap between what happens and what should happen

 

1.  Identify the problem

What is the problem? Consider whether the problem is actually what you think it is.  For example the problem may not be that a computer program doesn’t work.  Is the real issue that you do not have the tech skills to make the program work or that you don’t have someone with technical expertise that you can outsource to?

2.  Define the objectives

What is the desired outcome.  How much money, time, manpower do you have to reach the desired outcome? In the example above, the desired outcome is that the computer program will work.  Perhaps you have a budget of £300 and two hours to achieve this objective.

3.  Set decision criteria

What will the decision be based on? What is the most important criteria – time, money, manpower? In our tech example the decision might be based on finding the most efficient and effective solution with the resources (£300/2hrs) available to us.

4.  Identify possible solutions

I could teach myself how to use the computer program by purchasing and watching a video tutorial or I could outsource to a tech person.

5.  Compare solutions based on criteria

Which solution best fits the criteria?  Which solution would most efficiently and effectively meet the objectives? In this example, can I find someone to do the work within time and budget, or can I learn it myself within the time allowed?

6.  Implement the decision

Use your resources to implement the decision

7.  Review the effectiveness of the decision

This step is often overlooked but is actually really important.  Has the decision you made solved the problem?  Do you need to adjust your decision?  What can you learn about dealing with this problem for the future.

Broken down, no ‘problem’ is insurmountable.  No obstacle should stop you from pursuing your goals.  Using a step by step process to deal with problems can help you avoid becoming stuck.

What is innovation?

We’ve all heard the word innovation bandied around but what does it really mean and why is it so important to a business?

In a nutshell, innovation is progress. It’s taking an opportunity or idea and bringing it to market in the form of a product, service or improvement. However innovation isn’t just amazing new inventions and never seen before gadgets. Some of the most innovative innovations are the ones that take an existing idea and improve on it in a way that nobody had even thought of before. In the food industry Innocent and Graze have been held up as examples of companies that have taken something simple; smoothies and nuts & seeds and created something that is new, exciting with added value.

Managment Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

Are you stuck in a business rut? Ever heard the saying ‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got’? It’s a pretty well known saying that can really apply to a small business owner. Read on to find out one of the key mistakes a business owner can make, and how to avoid it:

Picture the scenario, you’ve built your business from ground up. You’ve slogged 16 hour days to get it where it is and you know every detail of every task, where every penny goes and how every last cog turns. You know what’s best for your business, right? Wrong.

During their research into managers Pfeffer and Sutton (2006) found that many ignored new evidence that was relevant to the decision making process. They found a number of reasons why managers did this;

Problem: Managers trust their own personal experience more than they trust hard facts

This is the situation where no matter what the evidence the manager or business owner doggedly refuses to acknowledge the evidence, instead believing that their knowledge of the business is superior. It might also be the case of where the business owner prefers to act on gut instinct. This is why consultants and outsiders can often look at your business with a critical eye and immediately see what improvements are required.

What action can you take? Look at the hard facts. Are there products, processes or people in your business that are no longer working efficiently or effectively?

Problem: Managers prefer to do what they’d always done

Managers would rather do things the way they’d always done it instead of testing new methods or instigating change. This results in methods that become dated and processes that become inefficient and ineffective.

What action can you take? Remember ‘If you always do what you’ve always done you’ll always get what you’ve always got’. Therefore you need to look to the evidence and make a change. Make one change at a time and assess the results before you move onto the next change. This process applies to everything from marketing to HR.

Problem: Managers are susceptible to ‘expert advice’ and consultant solutions

Once you’ve realised you need advice, there is one further thing to remember. Be wary of taking a consultant’s advice on face value rather than assessing the quality of the advice in the context of your own business. Unless all other factors are equal, advice cannot be universal. Results will always differ business to business as external factors differ.

What action can you take? Listen to advice. Consider the advice in the context of your own business. Test changes. Keep positive changes, drop negative changes. Rinse and repeat. Return to advisers that have been a good fit for your business.

Problem: Managers rely on hearsay and the ‘way things have always been done’

This type of manager fails to innovate, keeping things the same based on little supporting evidence and ultimately holding the business back. This trap is an easy one to fall into as a small business owner as the assumption is that you know best and staff will find it difficult to question new practises and suggest new ways of doing things for fear of negative repercussions

What action can you take? Be more open to new ways of doing things. Create a culture where new ideas and innovation amongst staff is encouraged. Trial new practises. Reward staff for new ideas.

Problem: Managers copy larger businesses

Managers copy the practises of larger businesses without thinking about the impications changes would have on their business. Managers act as if all factors are equal and then wonder why the impact of change is negative.

What action can you take? Consider everything you learn and see in the context of your own business. Look to your own facts and figures to see how change might affect your business.

5 Lessons You Can Learn From Innocent

Did you ever think there would be so much growth potential in healthy fruit drinks? Innocent has gone from zero turnover in 1999 to £75m in2006. From 3 employers to 105. From 0% market share to a staggering 62%. It’s the kind of growth many small business owners can only dream of.

Today the company turns over £113m, and all this from a headquarters called ‘Fruit Towers’. So what’s the secret of this succesful British company run by three Cambridge grads, and what can the rest of us learn from them?

Less is More

Innocent bucked the 330ml trend and brought to market their smoothies in 250ml bottles, a risky move that paid off as they differentiated themselves from the rest of the market. Another highly successful company that did the same thing with huge success was Red Bull, who’s slimline can is still immediately recognisable in the increasingly competitive energy drinks market.

If more, more, more was what made consumers tick in the nineties and early noughties then it’s less with a touch of luxury which is is grabbing the consumers attention today. This is good news for the small business owner who is more able to compete on these terms. No longer do we have to drown under the weight of the economies of scale that larger businesses can enjoy.

Be Unique

There’s a fine line between setting yourself apart and having fun and a pure marketing gimmick. Innocent appear to have found that line with quirky messages on their packaging, turf covered smoothie vans and knitted bottle cap covers. They know what their market considers cool and they work it.

Innovation isn’t all about inventions

Innocent didn’t reinvent the wheel. They took a fairly boring product in a market area they thought they could compete and differentiated themselves with clever marketing, a superior product and a commitment to their customers. Innovation takes many forms, taking a product and injecting new life into it and having the kind of success Innocent has had is equally as impressive as the bagless vacuum cleaner in my book.

Understand your Market

Understanding your market is actually not enough. You need to live your market, breath your market, spend every day listening to your market. Innocent completely get their young and professional market and everything they do is geared towards that, from the name to the logo to the pop festival they host. They know what makes their market tick and they keep delivering.

You can be ethical and successful

On top of being wildly successful Innocent also do more than their fair share for the environment and community. From offsetting carbon emmissions to using only 100% natural products, Innocent’s commitment goes beyond most companies of it’s size and larger. Oh, and they also give 10% of profits to charity.

Why Write an eBook?

When you meet someone who has written a book, or see someone’s status update linking to their book launch party, do you think, ‘”Wow”? Writing a book is a big status raiser: once you have a book published, you have real AUTHORity.

So, what’s AUTHORity, and how do you get it? Coach Allison Marlowe explains, “Author status gets you closer to the top of the Pyramid of Power and Profit.” If you are competing for clients, having a published book can give you the edge. People trust the printed (and eprinted) word. If a publisher trusts you enough to write a book, if you can pull together 25,000 or 50,000 coherent words on a topic, you’re seen as an expert.

Beyond that, an eBook is a great way to reach new audiences. £180million worth of eBooks were sold in the UK last year, and in the US there was a 160% increase on eBook sales in the first half of 2011 compared to the first half of 2010. Mark Coker of Digital publishers Smashwords says, “Some authors choose to give their entire book away for free because it’s more important to them they reach an audience, or they may want to leverage the notoriety from the book to monetize their fame in other ways.”

And it is up to you whether you choose to use your eBook power to build your reputation or build your bank account. Dahlia made over $5000 in eBook sales in July and has funded her move to Hawaii – that’s true testimony to what eBooks can do.

What’s your management style?

Sometimes it’s important in business to stop and reflect on yourself and the role you play within your business. During the start up phase and even later down the line it’s easy to become engrossed with working ‘in’ your business rather than ‘on’ it. You perform so many daily functions in your business that it leaves you scant time to reflect on the wider picture and where you want to take your business. Does this sound like you?

In the early days you may need to perform many of the functions of your business, but as it grows you need to outsource or employ staff to do much of the daily work if you want to build a bigger business.

Outsourcing and automation is something we’ve spent a lot of our time on over the summer so that as business owners and managers we can focus on managing and on the tasks that generate the money, the bits that can’t be outsourced. For us that’s creating training products, speaking at conferences etc.

Rosemary Stewart (1967) encouraged 160 managers to keep a diary of how they were spending their time over 4 weeks. She found that the managers could be divided into five broad categories depending on how they spent their time. They were;

 

  • · Discussers – spent majority of time liasing with staff and colleagues
  • · Emissaries – spent majority of time away from business meeting clients and suppliers
  • · Troubleshooters – lots of different meetings, jumping around from one task to another essentially fire fighting
  • · Writers – spent majority of time alone reading and writing and had little contact with other managers
  • · Committee member – had lots of formal meetings and contact with others inside the organisation

Reflecting on yourself, which category would you come into? Keep a log and find out how you spend your time if it’s not immediately obvious. Are you doing the tasks that give the most value to your business? What could you do differently that would add more value?

Why Create an eBook

Have you thought about creating an eBook? Read on to find out how eBooks are not the next big thing, they are TODAY’s big thing, and getting bigger!

In 2010, 7% of British adults got a dedicated eReader for Christmas, and it looks like it will be an even bigger figure this year. Just looking at Amazon’s Kindle, 3.6 million e-readers were sold in 2009, around 6.6 million devices in 2010, and this looks likely to jump 68% to 11 million devices in 2011. Add in the number of people reading eBooks on iPads or even on their pc, and you’ll see how eBooks can give you a massive reach. EBook sales are growing exponentially as this chart of US trade sales from the International Digital Publishing Forum shows:

So, lots of people are reading eBooks: this makes them an ideal way to start showcasing your expertise. Whether you are a blogger looking to bring together some of your posts to make an eBook on your favourite topic, or a business owner looking to showcase your expertise, eBooks are reaching more and more people. Make sure that you have an eBook to offer: don’t miss out.
